I. Overview
=======================================================================
A. WINDOWS 9x SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
* 100MHz Pentium-compatible CPU.
* 16MB DRAM (the Vortex hardware wavetable engine uses a native
4MB sample set. Samples are stored on disk and swapped to RAM
as required. Typical DRAM footprint is <2MB.
* 15MB hard disk space
* CD-ROM drive
* Access to Microsoft Windows 9x Installation CD-ROM.
* Good-quality speakers or headphones and connecting cables.
* Joystick and MIDI keyboard (optional).
B. NEW FEATURES:
This section lists new features incorporated into the Vortex
drivers.
- New and improved Icons on the A3D Settings test button.
- Added S/PDIF 44.1kHz support on AU8830.
- Updated the system tray program to reflect new output mode names:
Satellite speakers, Monitor Speakers and Quad Speakers.
- Added full support for SPDIF PCM support on all of the 8830 cards
that support SPDIF.
- The user interface on the Control panel has a fader on the A3D
Settings page, which allows the user to Fade between the front and
rear outputs. The fader is only functional on boards that have four
outputs with speakers connected to them.
- Added support for a one step uninstall.
- AC-3 support works through the waveout interface.
- Added new A3D 2.0 Demo App : "A3D 2.0 Rooms"
- Hardware Detection for Quad and Stereo Codecs.
- Full Quad support for all playback modes:
Quad support for Non 3D streams: They are distributed equally to
the front and rear channels.
Quad support for A3D: Full A3D rendering and crosstalk on front
channels plus panning on the rear channels. This includes A3D
SuperQuad which is a quantum leap over standard quad solution used
by 4 speaker 3D audio systems (discrete 4 channel panning).
Vortex 2 significantly improves upon that solution by introducing
A3D SuperQuad: The combination of discrete 4 channel panning with
HRTF support. The result is better 3D positioning coverage for
the locations where there are no speakers: above/below listener,
in between speakers, and inside / outside of the circle formed by
speakers.
Quad support for DS3D: Full rendering on front channels plus
panning on the rear channels.
- Selection between Narrow and Wide speaker placement for A3D.
- Support for multichannel AC-3 playback was added through the waveout
interface.
- Added support for additional Codecs.

Observations
I. Overview
---------------------------
A. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
1. Windows NT 4.0 PC with:
* Pentium 166MHz or faster CPU
* 32MB RAM
* Available PCI slot.
* Windows NT installed.
* 15MB hard disk space in the Windows NT partition.
* CD-ROM drive.
2. Good-quality speakers or headphones and connecting cables.
3. Joystick and MIDI keyboard (optional).
B. NEW FEATURES:
1. Added support for additional Codecs.
C. WINDOWS NT 4.0 DRIVER ISSUES:
1. BIOS Settings - For proper operation, any BIOS support for
"Plug and Play OS" or "Windows 95 OS" must be disabled. The NT
drivers attempt to configure the audio card if the BIOS setting
is set correctly, but are not successful on all machine types.
2. Matrox Display Adapters - The Matrox drivers shipping with NT
4.0 are poorly behaved in the system and hog the PCI bus during
heavy graphics usage, which can cause noticeable audio
dropouts.
If using Matrox Millennium II driver v3.20, (4.0.55), try
upgrading to the latest Matrox drivers. Upgrading to the latest
driver will not guarantee any improvement. In this case, you
may want to contact Matrox directly to address this problem.
3. Number Nine Display Adapters - The Number Nine Imagine128
drivers shipping with NT4.0 are poorly behaved in the system
and hog the PCI bus during heavy graphics usage, which can
cause noticable audio dropouts.
4. Riva 128 Display Adapters - The Riva 128 drivers shipping
with NT4.0 are poorly behaved in the system and hog the PCI bus
during heavy graphics usage, which can cause noticeable audio
dropouts. A new set of drivers for Riva128 display adapters
fixes the problem and is available from:
http://www.stb.com/drivers/velocity/vl128.html
5. 3COM network card drivers - Version 1.0 of the XL 3COM network
card driver found on the NT distribution CD can cause blue
screens during installations. Be sure to use 1.1 or above.
II. INSTALLATION
-----------------------
A. HARDWARE SETUP:
1. Power off your computer.
2. Remove the cover on your computer.
3. Remove the screw and bracket from any free PCI slot.
4. Insert the Vortex AU8830 sound card into the free PCI slot.
5. Screw in the sound card bracket.
6. Replace the cover on the computer.
B. WINDOWS NT 4.0 DRIVER INSTALLATION:
If you have an older version of the drivers, please uninstall them
now using the uninstallation steps in section C. After installing
the card, you can install multimedia drivers from the CDROM's
\NT40 directory. Here are step-by-step directions on Windows
NT 4.0 installation:
