Verify that the "hp deskjet 980c series" is present Note: There may be more than one printer with "980c" in the name. The one WITH "series" in the name is the printer driver from HP. The one WITHOUT "series" in the name is the Built-In driver included in the Windows XP operating system.
Make sure the HP printer with driver with "series" in the name has a Check Mark next to it, indicating it is the default printer.
To make a printer the default printer, right click on the printer name and select "Set as Default Printer"

To continue, click the "Have Disk" button.
Next, click "Browse" and go to the folder "c:\dj980\2kxpinf\enu\drivers\Win2k_xp". An "hpf980k.inf" file will be displayed. Select the file name and click "Open".
Click "OK" to continue. "hp deskjet 980c series" will now be found in the Printers column. Now, click the "Next" button.
If another printer driver is installed on the PC, select "Yes" or "No" to use this printer as the default printer and click "Next".
Choose "Do not share this printer" and click "Next".
Select "Yes" or "No" to print a test page and click "Next".
To complete the installation process, click "Finish". The hp deskjet 980c series printer driver will be added to the "Printers" window.

Use this utility when:
The USB driver installs part way, then the driver will not install. The Add New Hardware Wizard will not appear or one of the following conditions will occur.
After selecting Finish on the Add New Hardware Wizard during a USB install, the HP Printer Driver Installation screen fails to appear.
Plugging in the USB cable causes the Add New Hardware Wizard to appear on the screen briefly. The USB port driver loads, and the Printer Driver Installation screen fails to appear. There is no interaction required from the user in this scenario.
After printing successfully with the printer installed on the USB port and then uninstalling the printer driver, attempts to reinstall it fail.

Information:
The computer will not recognize the printer a second time (as described above) because during the first installation keys and folders are put into the computer's registry. The uninstaller on the installation CD will not delete these keys and folders that refer to the printer, therefore it appears to the computer that the printer is installed and will not allow it to be installed a second time. These printer entries in the registry need to be deleted. HP has developed an uninstaller utility that will delete all of the unnecessary printer references from the registry.

Instructions for running the USB Uninstall Utility from the Web site:
Unplug the USB cable from either the printer or the computer.
Click the Download Now button. The next screen should have a dot in the button next to "Save this program to disk", if not, select it.
Click OK.
In the Save in field, click the arrow to see the dropdown menu, select Desktop. Make note of the name in the File Name field.
Click Save. The file will be save to the Windows Desktop.
Close the web browser.

This driver is designed for use on computers that will be directly connected to the printer from the computer's parallel port with a parallel cable. Please note this driver has no "Program Group" functionality.
Installation instructions:
Create a new folder on the hard drive: c:\dj980 before downloading the printer driver.
Download the driver to the newly created c:\dj980 folder.
Plug the parallel cable into the printer and PC.
Open the c:\dj980 folder and double-click the downloaded "exe" file.
Under the c:\dj980\nt4inf folder a 3 letter language folder will be displayed. For example, the English driver will display a folder named "enu". This folder was created by double-clicking on the downloaded "exe" file.
From Windows, click "Start", "Settings", "Printers".
Next, double-click "Add Printer".
When the Add Printer Wizard screen appears, choose "My Computer" and click "Next".
Choose "LPT1" and click "Next".
To continue, click the "Have Disk" button.
Next, click "Browse" and go to the folder "c:\dj980\nt4inf\enu\drivers\Win_NT". An "hpf980n.inf" file will be displayed. Select the file name and click "Open".
Click "OK" to continue. "hp deskjet 980c series" will now be found in the Printers column. Now, click the "Next" button.
If another printer driver is installed on the PC, select "Yes" or "No" to use this printer as the default printer and click "Next".
Choose "Not Shared" and click "Next".
Next, select "Yes" or "No" to print a test page and click "Finish". The hp deskjet 980c series printer driver will be added to the "Printers" window.

Verify that the "hp deskjet 980c series" is present Note: There may be more than one printer with "980c" in the name. The one WITH "series" in the name is the printer driver from HP. The one WITHOUT "series" in the name is the Built-In driver included in the Windows XP operating system.
Make sure the HP printer with driver with "series" in the name has a Check Mark next to it, indicating it is the default printer.
To make a printer the default printer, right click on the printer name and select "Set as Default Printer"

Installation Instructions: USB Connection
1. Download the x64Drv5.64.0.17.exe file.

4. Choose Direct Connect.
5. Power on the printer, and connect it to the computer when prompted.
6. The "Found New Hardware Wizard" will be displayed.
7. Select No, not this time.
8. Select Install the software automatically (Recommended).
9. Depending on your product, you might see one or more Windows' warning screens.
10. Click Continue anyway or Yes each time these Windows warning screens appear.
11. Click Finish.
12. Reboot your computer (Highly Recommended).

Uninstall Instructions: USB Connection
1. Click Start.

Installation Instructions: Network (Wired and Wireless)

Checklist for Wired Network Setup:
1. Turn the printer on.
2. Ensure the printer is connected to the network.

Checklist for Wireless Network Setup:
1. Turn the printer on.
2. Ensure the "Wireless" is turned on for the printer. (Typically signified by Blue Light on printer.)
3. Write down the wireless setting for your network. They are stored in the access point (the box with antennas).
4. To get to the access point:
a. Press the Windows key and the R key. Type CMD and press ENTER.
b. Type IPCONFIG and press ENTER.
c. Write down the IP address that appears in the line that says "Default Gateway". Example "192.162.0.1"
d. Press the Windows key and the R key. Type http:// and press ENTER . Example http://192.168.0.1. That will take you to the access point web server. Check your access point manual for more instructions.
e. You need to find the following settings.
i. SSID or Network name
ii. Encryption (None or disabled, WEP or WPA)
iii. Key or paraphrase

f. If you cannot find these settings, contact the manufacturer of your access point for help.
5. If your printer has an LCD display, press Setup, go to the network menu and select the wireless configuration option (usually called Wireless Setup Wizard) and follow instructions.

Note: If the printer cannot connect to your wireless network:
1. Ensure MAC address control/filter includes new printer's MAC addresses OR MAC address control/filter is turned "Off".
2. Ensure SID broadcasting is temporary enabled for easier setup.
3. Follow your setup instructions that came with your printer for more information on configuring your wireless printer.

Description: The HP DeskJet 960, 980, 990, and PhotoSmart 1200 Series printers have media sensing capability to automatically detect the type of media loaded in the printer and then select optimal settings for that type of media. Slow printing on plain paper or poor print quality on photo paper may be an indication that the media sense feature may not be set for optimal performance and accuracy. Download and run this media sense calibration utility to reset the media sense values in your printer.
Download Instructions:
Click the Download button. The next screen should have a dot in the button next to "Save this program to disk", if not, select it.
Click OK.
In the Save in field, click the arrow to see the dropdown menu, select Desktop. Make note of the name in the File Name field.
Click Save. The file will be saved to the Windows Desktop.
Close the web browser.
Note: After running the utility described below you can delete this file from your Desktop.
Running the Media Sense Calibration Utility.
Load clean white media in the printer. Do not use recycled media.
Double click the dj920xx.exe file just saved to the Desktop and follow the instructions on the utility. The printer should pick a sheet of paper and shine a blue light on the sheet. Then the media should eject to the Out tray. There is no printout on the sheet of paper.
Once the paper is ejected the calibration is complete.

Description: Use this utility when:
The USB driver installs part way, then the driver will not install. The Add New Hardware Wizard will not appear or one of the following conditions will occur.
After selecting Finish on the Add New Hardware Wizard during a USB install, the HP Printer Driver Installation screen fails to appear.
Plugging in the USB cable causes the Add New Hardware Wizard to appear on the screen briefly. The USB port driver loads, and the Printer Driver Installation screen fails to appear. There is no interaction required from the user in this scenario.
After printing successfully with the printer installed on the USB port and then uninstalling the printer driver, attempts to reinstall it fail.
Information:
The computer will not recognize the printer a second time (as described above) because during the first installation keys and folders are put into the computer's registry. The uninstaller on the installation CD will not delete these keys and folders that refer to the printer, therefore it appears to the computer that the printer is installed and will not allow it to be installed a second time. These printer entries in the registry need to be deleted. HP has developed an uninstaller utility that will delete all of the unnecessary printer references from the registry.

Instructions for running the USB Uninstall Utility from the Web site:
Unplug the USB cable from either the printer or the computer.
Click the Download button. The next screen should have a dot in the button next to "Save this program to disk", if not, select it.
Click OK.
In the Save in field, click the arrow to see the dropdown menu, select Desktop. Make note of the name in the File Name field.
Click Save. The file will be save to the Windows Desktop.
Close the web browser.
When the Desktop appears, double click the xxx.exe file just saved to the Desktop.
In the Unzip to folder field, click the Browse button to see the drop down menu, select Desktop, and click OK.
Click Unzip. A message "2file(s) unzipped successfully" will appear. Click OK
Close the Winzip Self Extractor window.
Find the new HP icon on the Desktop labeled scr_xxx.exe. (xxx will be the model number of the printer.
Double click the HP icon. This will only take seconds.
Click Yes when asked "Do you want to restart your computer now?"
The computer will restart.
The printer may now be reinstalled by carefully following the set up instructions from the setup poster, the manual, or the web.

The USB driver installs part way, then the driver will not install. The Add New Hardware Wizard will not appear or one of the following conditions will occur.

Information:
The computer will not recognize the printer a second time (as described above) because during the first installation keys and folders are put into the computer's registry. Click the Download button. The next screen should have a dot in the button next to "Save this program to disk", if not, select it.
Click OK.
In the Save in field, click the arrow to see the dropdown menu, select Desktop. Make note of the name in the File Name field.
Click Save. The file will be save to the Windows Desktop.
Close the web browser.
When the Desktop appears, double click the xxx.exe file just saved to the Desktop.
In the Unzip to folder field, click the Browse button to see the drop down menu, select Desktop, and click OK.
Click Unzip. A message "2file(s) unzipped successfully" will appear. Click OK
Close the Winzip Self Extractor window.
Find the new HP icon on the Desktop labeled scr_xxx.exe. (xxx will be the model number of the printer.
Double click the HP icon. This will only take seconds.
Click Yes when asked "Do you want to restart your computer now?"
The computer will restart.
The printer may now be reinstalled by carefully following the set up instructions from the setup poster, the manual, or the web.

Open the c:\dj980 folder and double-click the downloaded "exe" file.

If another printer driver is installed on the PC, select "Yes" or "No" to use this printer as the default printer and click "Next".
Choose "Do not share this printer" and click "Next".
Select "Yes" or "No" to print a test page and click "Next".
To complete the installation process, click "Finish". The hp deskjet 980c series printer driver will be added to the "Printers" window.

Description: The HP DeskJet 960, 980, 990, and PhotoSmart 1200 Series printers have media sensing capability to automatically detect the type of media loaded in the printer and then select optimal settings for that type of media. Slow printing on plain paper or poor print quality on photo paper may be an indication that the media sense feature may not be set for optimal performance and accuracy. Download and run this media sense calibration utility to reset the media sense values in your printer.
Download Instructions:
Click the Download button. The next screen should have a dot in the button next to "Save this program to disk", if not, select it.
Click OK.
In the Save in field, click the arrow to see the dropdown menu, select Desktop. Make note of the name in the File Name field.
Click Save. The file will be saved to the Windows Desktop.

Running the Media Sense Calibration Utility.
Load clean white media in the printer. Do not use recycled media.
Double click the dj920xx.exe file just saved to the Desktop and follow the instructions on the utility. The printer should pick a sheet of paper and shine a blue light on the sheet. Then the media should eject to the Out tray. There is no printout on the sheet of paper.
Once the paper is ejected the calibration is complete.

Description: Use this utility when:
The USB driver installs part way, then the driver will not install. The Add New Hardware Wizard will not appear or one of the following conditions will occur.
After selecting Finish on the Add New Hardware Wizard during a USB install, the HP Printer Driver Installation screen fails to appear.
Plugging in the USB cable causes the Add New Hardware Wizard to appear on the screen briefly. The USB port driver loads, and the Printer Driver Installation screen fails to appear. There is no interaction required from the user in this scenario.
After printing successfully with the printer installed on the USB port and then uninstalling the printer driver, attempts to reinstall it fail.
Information:
The computer will not recognize the printer a second time (as described above) because during the first installation keys and folders are put into the computer's registry. The uninstaller on the installation CD will not delete these keys and folders that refer to the printer, therefore it appears to the computer that the printer is installed and will not allow it to be installed a second time. These printer entries in the registry need to be deleted. HP has developed an uninstaller utility that will delete all of the unnecessary printer references from the registry.

Instructions for running the USB Uninstall Utility from the Web site:
Unplug the USB cable from either the printer or the computer.
Click the Download button. The next screen should have a dot in the button next to "Save this program to disk", if not, select it.
Click OK.
In the Save in field, click the arrow to see the dropdown menu, select Desktop. Make note of the name in the File Name field.
Click Save. The file will be save to the Windows Desktop.
Close the web browser.
When the Desktop appears, double click the xxx.exe file just saved to the Desktop.
In the Unzip to folder field, click the Browse button to see the drop down menu, select Desktop, and click OK.
Click Unzip. A message "2file(s) unzipped successfully" will appear. Click OK
Close the Winzip Self Extractor window.
Find the new HP icon on the Desktop labeled scr_xxx.exe. (xxx will be the model number of the printer.
Double click the HP icon. This will only take seconds.
Click Yes when asked "Do you want to restart your computer now?"
The computer will restart.
The printer may now be reinstalled by carefully following the set up instructions from the setup poster, the manual, or the web.
