Setup for LavaPort PCI under Windows 3.1/3.11

1) Please note that Windows 3.1/3.11 does not support more than 4 Com Ports. Windows 3.1/3.11 users are therefore strongly recommended to set the LavaPort PCI jumper to the Com 3 position. After this is done, insert the LavaPort PCI into a PCI slot in your system (make sure power is off).

2) Power on your PC. If the system automatically enters Windows, exit to DOS.

3) Copy the file "Lavaconf.exe" from the Win3.11 directory of the LavaPort PCI floppy diskette to your hard drive.

4) Run Lavaconf.exe

5) Lavaconf.exe will display the two I/O addresses and one IRQ that are used by the LavaPort PCI. Make a note of them.

6) If Lavaconf.exe reports "IRQ=0", you will need to manually make an IRQ available to the PCI bus through CMOS (BIOS) settings. To do this reboot the system, and press DELETE to enter CMOS. Each CMOS setting is different, but most have a PCI configuration screen that will list IRQ assignments. Assign an unused IRQ to the PCI bus.

7) Enter Windows (WIN)

8) Install the Windows 3.1/3.11 driver. To do this click File, Run, and then access Setup.exe in the Win3.11 subdirectory on the LavaPort PCI diskette. The driver will install and ask you to reboot your system. After reboot, the Lava Configuration Utility will appear.

9) Using the Lava Configuration Utility, configure your Com Ports for the proper UART type, I/O address, IRQ, etc. You may use the Lava Configuration Utility to configure your existing (non-Lava) Com Ports as well as the LavaPort PCI. If you have 2 Com Ports previously installed on your mainboard, the LavaPort PCI ports will be configured as Com 3/4, but you will have to manually type in the I/O address and IRQ (as reported by Lavaconf.exe) into the appropriate screens.

10) In the Windows subdirectory, find the file called "System.ini" and open it using Write or Notepad. In this file there will be 2 lines that read:

ComXSHAREIRQ=0

where X are the port numbers (usually 3 & 4) that you have assigned in Step 9 using the Lava Configuration Utility. Both of these lines must be changed to

ComXSHAREIRQ=1

11) Save settings, exit Windows, and reboot.

12) Enter Windows and check that all settings have been saved in the Lava Configuration Utility. If you have problems entering the Lava Configuration Utility, you may have to open Control Panel and then Ports to verify your settings. If so, do not make changes in Control Panel, simply enter and exit, then open the Lava Configuration Utility again.

STEP1 BIOS(CMOS SETTINGS)

a) Shut down the Computer and enter your BIOS (CMOS) setup. Ensure that PnP OS installed is set to NO or DISABLED.
Reserve IRQs you have chosen for jumpered cards to Legacy ISA. This will eliminate any possibility of conflicts being created with those devices. Make sure that there is an IRQ available for our card.
Do this in the following manner:
Enter PNP CONFIGURATION SETUP.
Change RESOURCES CONTROLLED BY from AUTO to MANUAL.
Scroll down to the IRQ assigned to our card and change that IRQ from PCI/ISA PnP to Legacy ISA to make it unavailable for our card. If all the IRQs are made unavailable then the LavaPort PCI product will not install.
The previous method applies to an Award BIOS version 4.51 PG. Consult your motherboard manual to find similar settings changes and how to enter your BIOS setup.

STEP2 INSTALLING CARD:

a) With the power off place the Lava Parallel PCI into a PCI slot.
Ensure that the slot is not a Shared PCI/ISA slot. Consult your mother board to verify that the slot is not a shared PCI/ISA slot
b) Power up the computer and boot into Windows NT4.0 and log on as Administrator.
c) Run the setup.exe located on the NT4.0 directory on the floppy.
d) After setup has completed and the system has rebooted verify that the LavaPort has installed properly by going to Start Settings Control Panel and entering the LavaPort Control Panel Applet.

STEP3 ADDRESS ASSIGNMENT (FOR LAVA PARALLEL PCI PORTS ONLY)
To change the address assignment for the Lava Parallel PCI go to Start Settings Control Panel and Double Click the LavaPort Icon.
The LavaPort Control Panel Applet will appear and the Lava Parallel Port(s) will appear under the Lava Parallel Ports Tree.
The Lava Parallel PCI allows for manual Address Assignments. There are two manual addresses available: 0378 and 0278.
To change the address then hilite the port you wish to change and click Properties. In the drop down list for Base I/O Port Address you will have a choice of Default (PCI bus assigned address), 0378 or 0278.
If you are installing a printer to the Lava Parallel PCI choose the PCI Bus assigned address.
If you are installing a non-printer peripheral such as a scanner or external drive then choose either 0278 or 0378 . Ensure that you do not assign the Lava Parallel PCI to an address used by your onboard parallel port. To find out where your OnBoard Parallel Port is installed go to Start - Programs - Adminstrative Tools - Windows NT Diagnostics. Enter the Resources Tab and then click the Devices button to the bottom right. In the list of Devices that appear, double click the ParPort device. The IO address associated with the ISA bus is the OnBoard Parallel Port Address.


TROUBLESHOOTING

The LavaPort drivers will show messages in the Event Viewer regarding success or failure. If you are having trouble with the LavaPort go to Start - Programs - Administrative Tools - Event Viewer. Ensure that the System Log is enabled from the Log Menu. Write down any messages reported by the following services:
DetectLava,
SerialLava,
Serial,
and,
ParPort

Use of the LavaPort Control Applet:

USE OF LAVA CONTROL PANEL APPLET
1. The LavaPort Control Applet was written in a "Plug and Play" manner. It will attempt to install your card and attempt to show you any conflicts.
2. Information from LavaPort Control Applet installation is written to the System Log. Please refer here for more detailed information.
3. "Lava strongly recommends the use of the LavaPort Control Applet for use with your LavaPort-PCI product, for both installation and to make user-defined settings changes."
4. By clicking in Control Panel - LavaPorts you will find information on your LavaPort-PCI product. Double click it and you will see one of these possibilities:
* Just the icon, indicates NO CONFLICTS.
* Red "X" through the icon, indicates the hardware has been disabled. This can happen if you override the standard Com settings. Accessing the System Log will indicate the overlap in the Com Registers.
* Blue "!" exclamation point, indicates a System Conflict.
* Yellow "?" question mark, indicates a card not enumerated by the System (the conflict is unresolved).
