LAVAPORT ISA and PnP WINDOWS 95 DRIVER INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
----------------------------------------------------------------

This README file is both for the LavaPort-ISA card (also known as
the Lava Link-650) and the LavaPort-PnP card.
If you are installing either LavaPort board for the first time into
a new system, use the instructions below to install the appropriate
software drivers. If you have already installed a LavaPort card into
a Win95 system, you may wish to skip to the "Fixing Installation
Problems" section of this file.
First-Time Installation
------------------------

1. Configure the jumpers on the LavaPort-ISA (Link-650) board for an
unused Com Port I/O address & unused IRQ. If you are unsure which
Com Ports & IRQ's are unused, consult your PC documentation, or
Device Manager in Win95 Control Panel (also see Microsoft Documentation).
Skip this step with a LavaPort-PnP card.

2. Install either your LavaPort board into your Win95 system.
Choose any unused ISA slot.

3. Start Windows95. From the desktop double-click the Add New Hardware
icon. Follow the instructions on the screen to auto-detect your new
board.

4. The LavaPort-ISA only:
The LavaPort-ISA will be detected as a standard COM Port, and will
appear as such in the Win95 Control Panel's Device Manager. To verify
this, select the Control Panel icon in My Computer, then access System,
then Device Manager. Under Communications Ports, one of the Com Ports
should correspond to your LavaPort hardware configuration. Note: you
may wish to verify your hardware configuration using the Resources tab
in Device Manager for the particular port - this will report any Com
Address or IRQ conflicts.

5. While in Device Manager, double-click on the appropriate port which
corresponds to your LavaPort, and select the Driver Properties page.
Click the Change Driver button and install the LAVA.INF file. Several
additional property pages should appear in Device Manager for this Com
Port, after installation.

Fixing Installation Problems
-----------------------------

1. If you mistakenly used the Setup procedure for the LavaPort
Windows 3.1/3.11 driver to install the board, several changes have
been made to your SYSTEM.INI file which must be removed. When you
made the changes, Win95 automatically renamed your old SYSTEM.INI
file to SYSTEM.001 (or the next consecutive number e.g. SYSTEM.002 etc.)
and created a new modified SYSTEM.INI. To erase the changes that were
made, rename your old file to SYSTEM.INI.

2. If you installed the LavaPort in your Win95 system and went through
the Add New Hardware procedure, as prescribed in Microsoft's
documentation, the LavaPort should have been detected as a standard
Com Port. To verify this, select the System icon in My Computer, then
access Control Panel, then Device Manager. Under Communications Ports,
one of the Com Ports should correspond to your LavaPort hardware
configuration. Double-click on the appropriate port, and select the
Driver Properties page. Click the Change Driver button and install
the LAVA.INF file. Several additional property pages should appear
in Device Manager for this Com Port, after installation.

1. The Lava Link-650 device driver and Lava Com Port Utility may be used with any version of Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11.

2. The Lava Link-650 device driver makes certain changes in your SYSTEM.INI file. It is usually a good idea to save your current SYSTEM.INI file under another name before installation of the Link-650 software.

3. The Lava Link-650 installation software looks for the original Microsoft Com Driver for Windows 3.1/3.11 and replaces it. If you have previously replaced this driver with another driver (e.g. TurboComm, KingComm, etc.), these replacement drivers should be removed.

First-Time Installation
-----------------------

1. Configure the jumpers on the Lava Link-650 board for an unused Com Port I/O address & unused IRQ. If you are unsure which Com Ports & IRQ's are unused, consult your PC documentation, or MSD (see Microsoft Documentation). Please note, that MSD is not accurate when reporting IRQ assignments for Com Ports - Com Port will always be shown as using IRQ 3 & IRQ 4.

2. Install the Lava Link-650 board into your PC. Choose any unused ISA slot.

3. Start Windows. From Program Manager, select File, then Run, and type in the path in which the SETUP.EXE file can be found.

4. SETUP will install the Lava Com Port Utility and create a separate icon in Program Manager for it. Click the Com Port which corresponds to your Lava Link-650 and select 650 under UART type. Select the IRQ which corresponds to your hardware configuration, and then procede to configuring the various settings for the Link-650. Help with each setting can be accessed through the small help buttons.

5. You may choose to use the Lava Com Port Utility to run any other Com Ports which may be installed in your PC. Do this by double-clicking the appropriate Com Port and configuring it accordingly. To verify if you have a 450 or 550 UART type, run MSD from DOS and select om Ports.

6. Because any changes which you make to your configuration must be saved in the SYSTEM.INI file, you must restart Windows each time you modify the Lava Com Port Utility in order for changes to take effect.

STEP1 BIOS(CMOS SETTINGS)

a) Shut down the Computer and enter your BIOS (CMOS) setup. Ensure that PnP OS installed is set to NO or DISABLED.
Reserve IRQs you have chosen for jumpered cards to Legacy ISA. This will eliminate any possibility of conflicts being created with those devices. Make sure that there is an IRQ available for our card.
Do this in the following manner:
Enter PNP CONFIGURATION SETUP.
Change RESOURCES CONTROLLED BY from AUTO to MANUAL.
Scroll down to the IRQ assigned to our card and change that IRQ from PCI/ISA PnP to Legacy ISA to make it unavailable for our card. If all the IRQs are made unavailable then the LavaPort PCI product will not install.
The previous method applies to an Award BIOS version 4.51 PG. Consult your motherboard manual to find similar settings changes and how to enter your BIOS setup.

STEP2 INSTALLING CARD:

a) With the power off place the Lava Parallel PCI into a PCI slot.
Ensure that the slot is not a Shared PCI/ISA slot. Consult your mother board to verify that the slot is not a shared PCI/ISA slot
b) Power up the computer and boot into Windows NT4.0 and log on as Administrator.
c) Run the setup.exe located on the NT4.0 directory on the floppy.
d) After setup has completed and the system has rebooted verify that the LavaPort has installed properly by going to Start Settings Control Panel and entering the LavaPort Control Panel Applet.

STEP3 ADDRESS ASSIGNMENT (FOR LAVA PARALLEL PCI PORTS ONLY)
To change the address assignment for the Lava Parallel PCI go to Start Settings Control Panel and Double Click the LavaPort Icon.
The LavaPort Control Panel Applet will appear and the Lava Parallel Port(s) will appear under the Lava Parallel Ports Tree.
The Lava Parallel PCI allows for manual Address Assignments. There are two manual addresses available: 0378 and 0278.
To change the address then hilite the port you wish to change and click Properties. In the drop down list for Base I/O Port Address you will have a choice of Default (PCI bus assigned address), 0378 or 0278.
If you are installing a printer to the Lava Parallel PCI choose the PCI Bus assigned address.
If you are installing a non-printer peripheral such as a scanner or external drive then choose either 0278 or 0378 . Ensure that you do not assign the Lava Parallel PCI to an address used by your onboard parallel port. To find out where your OnBoard Parallel Port is installed go to Start - Programs - Adminstrative Tools - Windows NT Diagnostics. Enter the Resources Tab and then click the Devices button to the bottom right. In the list of Devices that appear, double click the ParPort device. The IO address associated with the ISA bus is the OnBoard Parallel Port Address.

TROUBLESHOOTING

The LavaPort drivers will show messages in the Event Viewer regarding success or failure. If you are having trouble with the LavaPort go to Start - Programs - Administrative Tools - Event Viewer. Ensure that the System Log is enabled from the Log Menu. Write down any messages reported by the following services:
DetectLava,
SerialLava,
Serial,
and,
ParPort

Use of the LavaPort Control Applet:

USE OF LAVA CONTROL PANEL APPLET
1. The LavaPort Control Applet was written in a "Plug and Play" manner. It will attempt to install your card and attempt to show you any conflicts.
2. Information from LavaPort Control Applet installation is written to the System Log. Please refer here for more detailed information.
3. "Lava strongly recommends the use of the LavaPort Control Applet for use with your LavaPort-PCI product, for both installation and to make user-defined settings changes."
4. By clicking in Control Panel - LavaPorts you will find information on your LavaPort-PCI product. Double click it and you will see one of these possibilities:
* Just the icon, indicates NO CONFLICTS.
* Red "X" through the icon, indicates the hardware has been disabled. This can happen if you override the standard Com settings. Accessing the System Log will indicate the overlap in the Com Registers.
* Blue "!" exclamation point, indicates a System Conflict.
* Yellow "?" question mark, indicates a card not enumerated by the System (the conflict is unresolved).

To Install the Lava Link-650 or LavaPort PnP card in an NT system:

1a) LAVAPORT-ISA (LINK-650) ONLY:

Configure the Link-650 card for the desired Port # and a free IRQ.
Eg: COM3:, IRQ 10

1 b) LAVAPORT-PnP ONLY:

i) Boot NT, logging on as "administrator" without the LavaPort PnP card installed.
ii) Determine which IRQ the Standard Serial Ports are using by going to Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | Windows NT Diagnostics. Look in the Resources tab and click the IRQ button.
This will list all the IRQs that are being used by the system. Write down the IRQ for the Devices Serial and if you have a Serial mouse then Sermouse.
iii) Shut down Windows NT and turn off the Power.
iv) Insert the LavaPort PnP into an unused ISA slot.
v) Boot NT, logging on as "administrator"
vi) Determine which IRQ the LavaPort PnP is using by going to Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | Windows NT Diagnostics. Look in the Resources tab and click the IRQ button. The LavaPort PnP will be using the IRQ listed for the Device Serial that was not listed in step ii). Write down this IRQ. This will be used for the IRQ in Step 8).
vii) Skip Step 2).

2) Boot NT, logging on as "administrator"

3) Access the Lava Drivers diskette and switch to the NT4.0 sub directory.

4) Before proceeding with the next step, ensure that your NT system is installed in the default directories, ie WINNT\SYSTEM32. If your system uses a different sub directory you will have to manually copy all files. See below.

Execute install.bat. This file will
a: copy the driver SeL650.sys into the WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS sub directory,
b: copy the control panel applet LINK650.CPL file into WINNT\SYSTEM32
c: start the control panel applet.

Note: if your system sub directories are not the default directories as described above, copy the above mentioned files manually into the appropriate directories. Then open Control Panel and execute the new Lava Link-650 Ports Applet.

5) The following screen will appear (depending on your installed serial ports, the listing under ports may vary)
