Observations
The following steps need to be followed after completing the default installation of Windows 95. These steps are required to make the display, sound, and PCMCIA operate properly. These are the only drivers which you need to load for Windows 95.
NOTE: So that things happen in a predictable order DO NOT INSERT ANY PCMCIA CARDS INTO THE SYSTEM until you get to the point in these instructions which says to insert the PCMCIA cards.
I. Video
1. Go to Control Panel, Display, and click on the Settings tab. Click on Advanced Properties and click the Change button. A list of manufacturers and models will appear. Insert the diskette with the downloaded drivers into the floppy drive and click Have Disk.
2. The system will ask you to specify the location of the driver. When it does, type "a:\ct95" and press ENTER. When it finds the driver, OK it.
3. Click on the monitor tab. Click Change. Click Show all Devices. Then click Standard monitor types then choose Laptop Display Panel 800x600. (if you have the 13.3" XGA LCD, Choose Laptop Display 1024x768). Click OK
4. Close the Advanced Properties.
5. Adjust the Desktop Area Slider to 800x600 (or 1024x768 if you have the 13.3" XGA LCD)
6. Set the colors to 256
7. Close the Display Properties and restart Windows 95
II. Audio
1. Open Device Manager. You can do this by clicking START, Settings, Control Panel, System, then clicking the device manager tab.
2. Look for Sound Video and Game Controllers. If it exists, click the plus sign next to it. Under Sound Video and Game controllers, if there is an entry for ESS 1688, click on it then click REMOVE.
3. Click the Plus Sign Next to Other Devices then double click on Unknown Device.
4. Click the Driver Tab then Click Update Driver.
5. Insert the diskette with the downloaded drivers and click next. Windows will not find the driver and ask you to specify an other location. Click on Other Location and enter "a:\ess95" and click finish. The system will begin to copy files. If you are asked for install disk #1 please specify "a:\ess95" for the file location.
6. It will locate the ESS 1788 plug and play audiodrive, click finish to accept this driver.
7. OK your way back out. If Windows 95 asks you to restart, do so.
III. PCMCIA
NOTE: The utility CD contains a directory (CWORKS) which says it is the PCMCIA driver for Windows 95 on the CD case. This driver is for prior versions of Windows 95 and will cause this version's PCMCIA services not to operate. DO NOT LOAD THIS DRIVER! If you do, the only way to remove it and make PCMCIA function properly is to erase Windows 95 and reload it.
1. Go to Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager. Under Sound Video & Game Controllers, double click ESS1788 Audio Drive. Click on the Resources Tab, Uncheck Use Automatic Settings and change the DMA to DMA1 and change the IRQ to IRQ 5. Click OK. You will get a warning about setting resources manually, just click OK to this warning.
2. In Device Manager, Under PCMCIA Sockets remove the 3 entries (2 Texas Instruments and 1 PCIC or compatible).
3. Close all Open Windows and restart the computer
4. Open Control Panel then double click the PC Card. The PCMCIA wizard will appear, just click on NEXT then NEXT then Finish. Then click to shutdown and restart the computer.
5. Go to Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager. Under System Devices, double Click PCI-BUS then Click the IRQ Steering Tab. Check the Box labeled Get IRQ table from PCIBIOS 2.1 call. Then Ok and close all windows and restart the computer.
6. Go back to Device Manager and expand the PCMCIA socket branch. You will have just 2 Texas Instruments Controllers. Double click on the first one then click on the resources tab. Uncheck use automatic settings and change the IRQ to IRQ 11 and change the memory range to 000D0000-000D0FFF. Ok this and you will get the warning about setting configurations manually, just OK the warning.
7. Double Click the Second Texas Instruments Controller and then click the resources tab. Uncheck use automatic settings and change the IRQ to IRQ10 and change the memory range to 000DE000-000DEFFF. Click Ok then you will receive the warning about setting resources manually, just OK the warning.
8. Close all Open Windows and restart the computer.
Once the following steps are finished, you can now insert your PCMCIA cards. If you purchased the PCMCIA card from Keydata then you can follow the instructions below. If you purchased a card from another party, consult their documentation to find the recommended installation procedure for Windows 95. Please note when reading PCMCIA card manufacturer's documentation that you should be looking for installation procedures for Windows 95. Loading drivers or files for another version of Windows or DOS can corrupt the Windows 95 PCMCIA functions for all PCMCIA cards.
Modems - When you insert the card it will ask to search for a driver. Insert the diskette which contains the downloaded drivers. This diskette contains the most popular modems which we have shipped with our system. If Windows 95 does not find the drivers from this diskette, you need to insert the diskette which came with that modem and have Windows 95 search that again.
Network Cards - If the procedure is different for the different types of network cards. If you purchased the ICCARD from Keydata then the drivers are also on the downloaded diskette. The installation would be the same as the modem setup above. Basically insert the card and when asked for the drivers, insert the diskette with the downloaded drivers.
