Installation Guide for PCI Parallel Ports
This installation guide describes the procedure to install the Nm9705CV, Nm9735CV, Nm9805CV, Nm9715CV, Nm9835CV, Nm9755CV PCI parallel ports in Linux platform.
Linux kernel provide a 'parport' code to support parallel port (/dev/lp0, /dev/lp1, /dev/lp2). This code provides the ability to share one port between multiple devices. And it is loadable when kernel is running.
The 'parport' code is split into two parts : generic (which deals with port sharing) and architecture-dependent eg. X86, SPARC. (which deals with actually using the port). Thus, please take the following steps to install 'parport' module!
Check the on-board parallel port's hardware resources
Most likely each motherboard has a built-in parallel port. And its hardware resources are settable with BIOS utility.
Enter the command more /proc/pci
The response is similar to the following
Bus 0, Device 11, function 0:
Serial controller : Unknown vendor Unknown device (rev 01).
Vendor id=9710, Device id=9705
Device id=9735
Device id=9805
Device id=9815
Device id=9835
Device id=9855

LSI Logic is providing the enclosed Storage Device Management
System (SDMS) 4.0 drivers electronically for your convenience.
SDMS is a trademark of LSI Logic Corporation.
While the files are provided to you, it does not imply technical
support on the part of LSI Logic should any problems arise during
the use or operation of these drivers. For the following reasons,
LSI Logic highly recommends that you contact either the place where
you purchased your system or the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)
of your system's motherboard for technical issues pertaining to SDMS.
Please note the following information:
* LSI Logic works with its OEM customers to correct any
anomalies that may occur within the complex interaction
of the operating system, driver, BIOS and hardware. Your
OEM is most aware of these interactions and would be the
one most capable of diagnosing a problem and, if necessary,
working with LSI Logic to correct it. It is the experience
of LSI Logic that what appears to be a LSI Logic SCSI problem
often is not and is indeed a system or software installation
problem.
* By contacting the OEM for support, you will be assured of
receiving the latest SDMS BIOS and drivers that have been
verified, certified, and licensed by your OEM on that OEM's
hardware platform.

Installing Drivers for the first time.
a. Shutdown Windows.
b. Turn the Power to the computer OFF.
c. Insert the peripheral card into the computer.
d. Insure that there are no external devices connected to the Ports at this time. They
can interfere with the installation of the Drivers.
e. Turn the computer ON.
f. Windows should detect the new card, and automatically invoke the “Add New
Hardware” wizard. If not, manually start the wizard.
i. Open the Control Panel
ii. Open “Add New Hardware”
g. At the dialog box which says “This wizard searches for new drivers for:”
i. The Nm9835CV is actually listed as “PCI Communication Device” (the
name the PCI Specification uses for both Serial Ports and Parallel Ports).
ii. Click “Next” to start the process.
h. At the next dialog “What do you want Windows to do?”
i. Select “Search for the best driver for your device. (Recommended)”
ii. Click “Next” to proceed.
i. At the next dialog, specify where Windows should look for the files.
i. Select “Floppy” if this is where you un-zipped the Driver files, otherwise
select “Specify a location” and browse to the directory on the Hard Disk
containing the new files.
ii. Click “Next” to continue.
j. At the next dialog,
i. Insure that the path Windows says it will get the Drivers from is the same
as where you expect it to be: “A:\...” for the floppy etc. Sometimes
Windows will find remnants from a previous installation and use that
location instead of the new path. If this occurs, see the section about
“Removing Previously Installed Drivers”, and re-start this procedure from
the beginning after the old drivers have been removed.
ii. Click “Next” to continue.
k. At the next dialog,
i. Click “Finish” when Windows says it has finished installing the Drivers.
l. Windows should display additional dialog boxes saying it has found new
hardware, and is installing the appropriate software to handle the new devices.
These steps should proceed without any additional input from you.
m. When the Windows desktop is displayed, the Driver installation is complete.

Installation Guide for the LSI Logic SDMS Drivers: SYMC8XX.SYS V4.16.00
SYM_HI.SYS V4.16.00
SYM_U3.SYS V5.08.00
This file describes the features and use of the LSI Logic SDMS device
drivers for the Windows NT 4.0 operating system environment. LSI Logic
uses the same filenames for their drivers for different Windows operating
systems. The driver files are packaged either in separate subdirectories
based on the Windows operating system or on different flex disks.
To determine the driver file for Windows NT 4.0, note that the filename ends
with ".sys". For example, SYMC8XX.SYS. (The same is true for Windows 2000.)
To determine the operating system version, go into Windows Explorer,
display the driver file, right click on the filename, click on Properties,
click on the Version tab. Finally, click on the Internal Filename in the
lower section. For Windows NT 4.0, the filename appears as filename (NT 4.0).
For example, SYMC8XX.SYS (NT 4.0).

******************** Introduction for Windows NT 4.0 ********************
Windows NT 4.0 is an operating system designed to run on processors using
current technology. It provides a graphical user interface environment
incorporating many high-level features (refer to the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
documentation for details). An I/O manager handles I/O requests in Windows
NT 4.0. To address a SCSI peripheral, the I/O manager goes through the
appropriate drivers. Class drivers for hard disk, floptical, CD-ROM, printer,
and scanner peripherals are provided in Windows NT 4.0.
Other class drivers, provided by peripheral manufacturers, may be added to
support new devices. Tape device support is built into the operating system
itself and does not require a class driver. Microsoft provides the port
driver and LSI Logic provides the miniport drivers, which are called
SYMC8XX.SYS, SYM_HI.SYS, and SYM_U3.SYS. These drivers complete the path to
an LSI Logic controller or processor with an optional SDMS SCSI BIOS. The next
sections describe these drivers and their installation.
