Audio Drivers - ESS Technology, ESS 1879
Operating System
OS2 Warp
Version
2.12
Size Driver
335KB
File Name
1879os2.exe
Observations
The ES1879 AudioDrive OS/2 Driver Software Release incorporates
the following features.
Version 2.12 Features
ES938 support
An application, SPATIAL.EXE, is provided to control ES938 3D
Stereo Processor or the built-in Spatializer.
ES689/ES690 support
A /W:1 parameter can be added to the device driver line in
CONFIG.SYS to utilize ES689/ES690 for MIDI output.
Full-duplex capability
The OS/2 driver supports playing and recording simultaneously 2
wave files.
ESFM support
The OS/2 driver supports ESFM, ESS's advanced FM music synthesis
technology.
APM support
The OS/2 driver supports Advanced Power Management (APM). It is
recommended that users stop audio applications before putting
the system into Suspend mode. The ES1879 is put into local
power mode when all audio streams are closed. ES938 is also
powered down upon receiving Suspend message.
Hardware volume control support
The OS/2 driver supports hardware volume control. The volume
settings are passed to MMPM/2 via a daemon program,
ESDAEMON.EXE. The program will save the volume settings and
restore them on startup.
A /H:# parameter can be added to the device driver line in
CONFIG.SYS to specify the number of additional steps generated
by one hardware volume control interrupt. The default number is
zero. The maximum is 3.
BIOS audio volume control support
The driver checks the master volume before changing it in case
the BIOS or other application has modified it.
Device sharing between OS/2 and WIN-OS/2
The audio device can be shared between Windows applications and
OS/2 under an exclusive sharing arrangement. If the device is
not currently being used by an OS/2 application, when Windows
runs an audio application, Windows will own the audio device
until the Windows application (or session) is terminated. Then
ownership will pass to the next application requesting it (OS/2
or Windows). This all occurs while maintaining the state of the
device for all applications.

Chips AVI Video Capture Driver AVI Capture drivers
Preliminary Production Release 1.0.0.0
Installation, Upgrade, Applications tested with etc at the end.
Rev 1.0.0.0
Jan 31, 1998
1. Limited sizes to 320x240. Earlier bigger sizes showed up but were not
supported.
2. Reports dropped frames by using the estimated framerate. Makes the AVI file
more synchronous even if no sound is present.
3. Fixed MSDOS Full Screen and dynamic mode change (3DMaze screen saver)
hang problem when AVI Capture driver is active.
4. Removed misleading display with no resources when installing.
Rev 0.0.0.3
Dec 5, 1997
1. Modified PCVideo.DLL to work with both SMBus and GPIO
2. Modified PCVideo.DLL to return error if VPM is using the Video Port.
3. Modified PCVideo.DLL to do different alignment for 554 and 555.
Rev 0.0.0.2
Nov 11, 1997
Initial release
To Install:
1. Go to the Control Panel from the Start menu (CTRL-ESC, Settings, Control
Panel), select Add New Hardware, Next, No (to windows searching for New
Hardware, since the decoder is on the GPIO pins, Windows will not
detect it), Sound Video and Game Controllers, Have Disk.
SMBus systems (Gateway 2000) do not need special GPIO settings.
The default settings are for GPIO 0 and 1. If your system has different
settings, edit the PCVideo.INI file to reflect the new settings for
GPIO_SDA and GPIO_SCL
To upgrade:
1. First remove the device from the Control Panel, System, Device Manager,
Sound Video and Game Controller, Chips and Technologies Video Capture.
Then install it again like described above.
This release has the following limitations
1. It does not use a VSync Interrupt due to lack of this in the Hardware
2. The frame rate is limited to 5 frames per second (320x240 8bpp, P150)
3. Tearing may be visible, especially if the capture is in 16/24bpp modes.
4. This conflicts with the VPM and only one can be active at a time,
either the VPM or the AVI Capture driver. The AVI Capture driver detects
if the video port is in use and returns an error.
5. Fails a couple of tests of the Microsoft WHQL Video Tests in 320x240.
No errors if reduce size.
6. Overwrites display memory momentarily in some apps when starting.
7. Does not support dynamic mode switching in Windows. Usually see corruption
or loss of overlay.
8. Supports formats upto 320x240 only.
9. Displays and "!" through the device in the Device Manager and reports that
the device is not working properly even though there is no problem.
This release has been tested with the following applications and works
reasonably well. (~12fps in 24bpp 160x120, and ~29fps in 8bpp 160x120, P266)
1. Microsoft NetMeeting 2.1 (cound see and transmit video)
2. CU-SeeMe 3.1 (could see video. Network problems occured when tried connection)
3. VideoWave from MGISoft (could see, record and playback video and frames and
create AVI files)
4. Stefra (could see, record and playback video and frames and create AVI files)
5. Intel Internet Videophone with Proshare Trial Applet 2.1 (could initialize video
Network problems prevented further testing)
6. VDOPhone 3.0
7. Microsoft VidCap.
8. Microsoft WHQL Video tests

Observations
O2 Micro 6832/6836/6860 PCMCIA Driver Utility File Descriptions:
o2init.sys, o2init.com, o2init.doc:
These files are used to initialize various registers on the O2Micro cardbus
controller from a script (.dat) file. See o2init.doc for help.
preg.exe:
A DOS utility to view/edit PCI configuration space of PCI devices.
o2sw.exe:
A Windows utility to control O2Micro Zoom Video features.
o2.exe:
A DOS utility to view/edit PCMCIA ExCA registers.
o2acpi.exe:
A Windows utility to enable/set ACPI modes of an ACPI CardBus controller.
Debugging an O2Micro Cardbus controller:
A cardbus controller is a PCI device with standard PCI registers. The
cardbus controller registers are memory mapped at the location set in PCI
register 10h. Under Win95, the device manager properties can be examined
to find that memory location. However, Win95 maps this memory to some
other address. This makes debugging the cardbus controller a bit tricky.
The easiest way to debug is to use SoftIce for Win95. To find the
cardbus registers in SoftIce, use the 'phys' command to translate the
memory address to the physical memory address. For example 'phys C8000'
gives an address like C1297000. To dump the registers do 'd #30:c1297000'.
Cardbus registers are mapped into this memory block at offset 0, and the
pcmcia/ExCA registers are mapped into this memory at offset 800h.
The O2Micro Cardbus Controller is a single chip with 2 PCI devices
(functions). Windows 95 views the chip as 2 separate PCI devices so there
are two O2Micro entries in the Device Manager display, and there are two
blocks of memory allocated, one for each PCI function of the controller.
You find the memory mapped registers for each function the same way,
but Win95 maps their addresses independently and they might not be in
contiguous locations. Take care when translating the memory addresses,
and also make sure the the memory you are viewing is correct for the
slot you are testing.
