Technology Overview
USB stands for Universal Serial Bus. It is a
standard that has been adopted by leading
manufacturers within the computer industry to
define a new type of peripheral connection
scheme. It is designed to replace older parallel
and serial ports, cables, and connectors with
something faster and easier to use. USB is:
?? Easier -- Windows 98, Me and 2000 will
automatically recognize newly installed
devices.
?? Quicker -- You won’t have to reboot when
installing.
?? Faster -- Top USB data speed is around 100
times faster than a serial connection.
?? Greater Expandability -- Using USB hubs
you can connect up to 127 devices to your
computer.

Observations
This document describes the installation of D-Link's Windows 2000 drivers for the USB to serial function
supported by D-Link's DU-H4SMK USB Hub Controller. The guide consists of a driver summary, a guide to
installing the drivers with generic INF files and finally a guide to uninstalling the drivers.
Driver Summary
The USB <-> Serial Port drivers include the following modules
dlkbus.sys WDM driver for serial converter
dlser2k.sys WDM driver for serial communications
dlkbus.inf INF file supporting installation of USB to Serial converter
dlser2k.inf INF file supporting installation of Serial port
Installing the Drivers
The following section describes the installation of D-Link's Windows 2000 followed by the installation of a
serial modem on the newly installed serial port.
Where earlier versions of D-Link drivers have been loaded on the installation machine or where problems are
being encountered please uninstall D-Link's drivers using the Windows 2000 Add/Remove Hardware Wizard
in combination with D-Link's dlkun2k utility.
First copy driver and INF files onto a floppy. Plug in USB to serial cable.
This brings up the Found New Hardware Wizard ¡V Searching for Drivers. The walkthrough is fairly
straightforward ¡V select [Next] when required, pointing the Wizard to search floppy a:\win2k . This installs the
drivers for D-Link DU-H4SMK.
This is then repeated with the Found New Hardware Wizard ¡¥Searching for Drivers¡¦ for the D-Link USB Serial Port.
Once this has completed successfully the installation can be checked as follows
My Computer -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager ¡V>View
First select to view by connection
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) BIOS -> Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System -> PCI Bus ->
PCI to USB Host Controller -> USB Root Hub -> Generic USB Hub -> D-Link DU-H4SMK -> D-Link USB Serial Port (COMx)
Then select to view by type
Ports (COM & LPT) -> D-Link USB Serial Port (COMx)
Plug modem serial cable socket into USB to serial cable dongle. Select
My Computer -> Control Panel -> Phone and Modem
Select Add Modem ¡V and proceed to load Windows 2000 drivers for modem.
If an .INF file is available for the modem of choice then Windows will complete plug and play interrogation
of the modem and configure it as required, otherwise the modem will be installed as a standard modem.
To test the modem
My Computer -> Control Panel -> Phone and Modem
select the modem of interest then
Properties -> Diagnostics -> Query Modem
Alternatively connect to the internet through an ISP, remembering to change settings to use the newly
installed modem.
