Observations

New Firmware Upgrade Procedure
Users have to upgrade three different firmware files (fwu.hex, wssldr.hex, fwn.hex) in order to accomplish new firmware (v4.10.02) upgraded. Users can upgrade firmware through SmartConsole Utility or Web GUI as following steps:

1. Upgrade firmware through SmartConsole Utility (Please refer to below step. i-xi)

i. Execute smart console utility

ii. Click Discovery button to search target switch

iii. Double click target switch to add to monitor list

iv. Click firmware upgrade button

v. Click Browse button to search fwu.hex firmware file from user’s local PC

vi. Enter password and click start button to start firmware upgrade

vii. Wait for firmware upgrade complete

viii. Repeat step.i ~ step.vii, but choose WSSldr.hex to upgrade in step.v

ix. Repeat step.i ~ step.vii , but choose fwn.hex to upgrade in step.v

2. Upgrade firmware through Web GUI (Please refer to below step. i-vi)

i. Open web GUI , clicking tool and choosing Firmware Backup & Upload

ii. Click browse button and choose fwu.hex firmware file from local user’s PC

iii. Click Upload button to start upgrade firmware

iv. Wait for firmware upgrade complete then restart Web GUI
v. Repeat step.i ~ step.iv , but choose WSSldr.hex in step.ii

vi. Repeat step.i ~ step.iv , but choose fwn.hex in step.ii

1. Design in 2M top parameter boot flash and 4M top/bottom parameter boot flash for component availability, since the original 2M bottom parameter boot flash has shortage problem. If the product was returned to RMA because of flash broken, please check the P/N of flash as below in order to upload corresponding boot code of flash.

3. Fix the bug that device does not respond PING or Web after applying the VLAN configurations from a Linux station.
4. Fix the following bugs of 802.1X:
- Cannot block the port after authentication failure
- Unplug the authorized port, it will remain in “Authorized” status

Setup The DGS-1216T Gigabit Smart
Switch
The setup of the Switch can be performed using the following steps:
A. Install the DGS-1216T in a fairly cool and dry place. See Technical
Specification for the acceptable operation temperature and humidity
ranges.
B. Install the DGS-1216T in a site free from strong electromagnetic
field generators (such as motors), vibration, dust, and direct
exposure to sunlight.
C. Leave at least 10cm (about 4 inches) of space at the front and rear
of the hub for ventilation.
D. Visually inspect the DC power jack and make sure that it is fully
secured to the power adapter.
E. Install the DGS-1216T on a sturdy, level surface that can support
its weight, or in an EIA standard-size equipment rack.
F. When installing the Switch on a level surface, attach the rubber feet
to the bottom of each device. The rubber feet cushion the hub and
protect the hub case from scratching.
Rack Mounting
The DGS-1216T can be mounted in an EIA standard-size, 19-inch rack,
which can be placed in a wiring closet with other equipments. Attach the
mounting brackets to both sides of the Switch (one at each side), and
secure them with the provided screws.

Use the screws provided. Then, use screws provided with the
equipment rack to mount the Switch in the rack.
Connecting Network Cable
The DGS-1216T supports 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet. It runs
full/half duplex transfer mode for 10/100Mbps and full duplex transfer
mode for 1000Mbps. Each port on the DGS-1216T supports Auto-
MDI/MDI-X. Auto-MDI/MDI-X is a feature that eliminates the need for
worrying about using either a standard or crossover cable—you can
use either one—and allows any port to be an uplink port.
AC Power
The DGS-1216T can be used with AC power supply 100~240V AC,
50~60Hz. The power switch is located at the rear of the unit adjacent to
the AC power connector and the system fan. The switch’s power supply
will adjust to the local power source automatically and may be turned on
without having any or all LAN segment cables connected.

The DGS-1216T copper Gigabit Smart Switch presents a cost-effective solution for the small and medium business to implement
Gigabit Ethernet packet switching with easy fine-tuning of network performance and security. This switch comes with 16
10/100/1000BASE-T copper Gigabit ports and 2 combo SFP (Mini GBIC) ports for flexible fiber Gigabit connection. Port
trunks are provided for server deployment and network backbone attachment, while functions important for bandwidth-intensive
applications such as Priority Queues and VLANs are supported to enable you to implement Quality of Service (QoS) and
security without having to go through complex network management usually found in other managed switches.
16 Copper Gigabit Ports
2 Combo SFP Slots for Flexible Fiber Connection
Port Trunks for Aggregated Bandwidths
16 Gigabit ports provide an inexpensive alternative solution
to fiber-optic. Using your existing low-cost Cat. 5 copper
twisted-pair wires as the transmission media, these ports
allow you to instantly upgrade your servers to Gigabit
capability without requiring you to install new, expensive
fiber cables. All ports support 10/100/1000Mbps network
speed auto-sensing, full/half duplex auto-negotiation and
auto MDI/MDIX plug-and-play.
2 combo SFP (Mini GBIC) slots are provided for flexible
fiber connection. You can select to install optional
transceiver modules in these slots for short, medium or longdistance
fiber backbone attachment. Use of the SFP will
disable their corresponding built-in 10/100/1000BASE-T
connections.
Ports can be combined together to create multi-link loadsharing
aggregated bandwidths to a server or a network
backbone. To expand the network, you can also make use of
the port trunks to eliminate bottlenecks between the
cascaded switches. The switch allows you to combine 2 or 4
ports per trunk to create multi-link port trunks.
VLANs for Enhanced Security & Performance
Quality of Service Support
Port Mirroring
The switch support VLANs to let you improve security and
bandwidth utilization by limiting the broadcast domains and
confining intra-group traffic within their segments. To
segment up the network, VLAN-supported workstations and
servers that are connected to the switch can be grouped into
different Virtual LANs (VLANs).
The switch supports Layer 2 802.1p Priority Queue control to
prioritize network packets. Classification of users' data
priorities can be based on a data packet Priority Queue. This
QoS function support allows you to run bandwidth-intensive
and delay-sensitive applications and to attach video servers to
the switch for video conference.
The switch supports port mirroring to assist network traffic
monitoring. The network administrator can use this function
as a diagnostic tool or debugging feature, especially when
fending off an attack. It enables you to keep close track of
switch performance and alter it if necessary. Port mirroring
can be managed locally or remotely. The administrator places
a protocol analyzer on the port receiving the mirrored data to
monitor each segment separately. The analyzer captures and
evaluates the data without affecting the client on the original
port.
