10/100/1000Mbps Copper Gigabit PCI Card for PC
The D-Link DGE-528T is a high-performance 10/100/1000Mbps copper Gigabit PCI card for desktop PC. Installable in a PC
equipped with PCI expansion slots, this card turns a desktop computer into a high-bandwidth Gigabit workstation or a server
running at 2000Mbps full-duplex speed.
High-performance Gigabit Speed
VLAN to Improve Performance and Security
Wake-On-LAN for Power Management
Capable of running at full-duplex Gigabit speed, this card
gives your PC 2000Mbps data transmission on your existing
Cat. 5 twisted-pair network cable. As an inexpensive
alternative solution to fiber-optic, the card allows you to
instantly upgrade to Gigabit without requiring you to install
new, expensive fiber cables. The card supports
10/100/1000Mbps network speed auto-sensing and full/half
duplex auto-negotiation.
The card provides on-board screening of VLANs Tagged
Ethernet frames, allowing your PC to be configured with a
VLAN-supported switch. Your PC can be part of a VLAN
network, where domains are segmented up to enhance
performance and security.
Wake-On-LAN (WOL) is an Advanced Configuration Power
Interface (ACPI) function allowing a powered OFF computer
to be powered ON from a remote station. This function
allows the administrator to send wake-up signals to a
computer. The WOL function provides a great utility for
power management of the PC and allows users to initiate
action at irregular times and from distant locations.
Flow Control to Minimize Packet Loss
The card's embedded flow control and independent FIFO
provide a means to protect against possible data loss during
transmission on the network. When connected to a Gigabit
switch supporting flow control, the card receives signals
from the switch regarding buffer overrun during peak usage
periods. The card then delays transmission until the switch is
ready again to accept new data.
Small Form Factor, Lower Power Requirement
Using a single chip solution, this card is very small in size
and consumes very little power of your computer system.

Pre-installation Procedures:
If you have already installed the DGE-528T into a PCI slot, advanced users may
utilize the “Add New Hardware Wizard” to manually specify the location of the
driver on the CD-ROM.
Otherwise, we strongly recommend canceling the “Add New Hardware
Wizard” and instead using the “Install Drivers” program in the CD-ROM.
Here is quick summary of the proper installation procedure:
• Run the driver installation from the DGE-528T CD-ROM.
• Turn Off the computer and install the DGE-528T into the PCI slot.
• Restart the computer to complete the installation.
Installing the DGE-528T Drivers
• Turn ON the computer.
• Insert the driver CD, which is included with the DGE-528T, into
the CD-ROM drive.
The following window will appear.
Click on “Install Drivers.”
For Windows 2000 , Windows ME and XP users, the following screen will
appear.
For Windows 98SE users, this screen will be displayed.
Next, TURN OFF the computer and unplug
the power cord.
Installing the DGE-528T into the
computer’s PCI slot
Note: To avoid static electric charges, please touch an unpainted screw on
the outside of the power supply before installing or working with the DGE-
528T.
• Turn off your computer and unplug the power cord.
• Remove the back cover of your computer. (Refer to your computer’s
manual if needed.)
• Locate an available PCI slot. PCI slots are usually white or cream
colored.
• Remove the backplate (the small piece of metal that covers the
opening for the PCI card on the back cover that you just removed.)
• Insert the DGE-528Tcarefully and firmly into the PCI slot.
• Secure the DGE-528Twith the screw from the backplate.
• Replace your computer’s cover.

Introduction
The D-Link DGE-528T is ideal for the small office or home office environment. After completing the
steps in this manual, you will have the ability to share information and resources - such as files and
printers - and take full advantage of a “connected” environment for work and play!
The DGE-528T comes with drivers for the most popular operating systems and can be integrated
into a larger network. However, this manual is designed to help you network two computers running
Windows 95/98, Windows Me and Windows 2000 in a peer-to-peer configuration. Yet, the standards
compliant DGE-528T gives you the flexibility to expand and customize your Fast Ethernet / Gigabit Ethernet
network at will.
The Fast Ethernet standard allows you to connect computers and devices at speeds up to 100 Mbps.
Gigabit Ethernet allows speeds up to 1000 Mbps. A Dual-Speed 100/1000 Mbps Ethernet / Gigabit Ethernet
network combines both standards allowing computers and devices of different speeds to communicate
with each other. The DGE-528T is a Dual-Speed 100/1000 Mbps Fast Ethernet / Gigabit Ethernet network
card.

Technology Basics
About Gigabit Ethernet
Gigabit Ethernet is a network technology specified by IEEE Standard 802.3ab. It extends the traditional
100Mbps Fast Ethernet technology to achieve 1000Mbps transmission and reception, while retaining
the same CSMA/CD Ethernet protocol. Thus, while Gigabit Ethernet provides a tenfold increase in network
capacity, it is wholly compatible with traditional 100Mbps Fast Ethernet network facilities. This compatibility
is the key to easy and efficient upgrades to 1000Mbps in your network areas needing greater bandwidth.
Upgrading selected areas to Gigabit Ethernet does not require hardware or software changes in network
areas where traditional 100Mbps Ethernet is providing good service. For upgrading, Gigabit Ethernet is
the clear choice in terms of cost-effectiveness, as well as convenience and smoothness in transition.
