Hardware Installation Card
Introduction
This Hardware Installation Card discusses the Hostess i
line of 8- and 16-port serial controllers.
The Hostess i serial card fits into the ISA or EISA slot of a
personal computer, and supports either asynchronous or
synchronous serial communications in both RS-232 and
RS-422 modes. You can install up to four Hostess i cards
in a single computer, for a maximum of 64 serial ports per
system (depending on card configuration).
Hostess i 8-port cards can be upgraded to 16-ports with a
simple plug-in module. You can also add up to 8 MB of
memory to each card using standard 30-pin SIMMs.
Before Installing the Hardware
Before you install the Hostess i card, you must do the
following:
1. Set the hardware I/O address.
2. Configure ports for RS-232 or RS-422 operation.
3. Install and configure the 16-port upgrade, if required.
4. Install memory upgrades, if required.
The following sections discuss these procedures.
Installing Memory Upgrades
The Hostess i card features 128KB of DRAM memory.
This can be expanded up to 8 MB using standard 30-pin
SIMMs (80 ns or faster, parity or non-parity).
The SIMM sockets are located at the left end of the card.
SIMMs must be installed in matched pairs. (For example,
install two 4MB SIMM modules. See the Specifications
table for a list of valid SIMM types.)
SIMMs have alignment notches and pegs, and cannot be
reversed. To install a SIMM, lay the connector edge in
first, then gently press the SIMM down until the spring
latches snap into place. DO NOT FORCE THE SIMM
INTO THE SOCKET.
To remove an installed SIMM, gently spread the spring
latches on the sides, then pop the SIMM up. Again, do not
force or pry a SIMM out of its socket. Doing so may
damage the SIMM, the socket, the Hostess i card, or all
three.

Scope
This reference card discusses the interface box you
purchased with your Comtrol™ controller. Use this card
if you want to configure ports for RS-422 or synchronous
operation. Only the Hostess i and Hostess i/MC models
support synchronous mode.
Note: The default setting for
Configuring the Interface Box
Tables 1 and 2 provide you with the information that
you may need to configure the interface box. If you plan
on using RS-232 for asynchronous operation, you can
connect your peripherals without configuring the
interface box.
You must remove the back cover of the interface box to
configure the interface box if you wish to use:
• RS-422 mode
• Synchronous operation for the Hostess i or
Hostess i/MC. Make sure you have previously
configured the controller for synchronous mode, or
do so before using Ports 1 and 2 for synchronous
operation.
Note: If you open the interface box to configure it, be
aware that the jumpers are not specifically coded
to the adjacent port.
If you need to test signals, the ports are labeled on the
inside of the interface box.
There are two styles of jumpers used to configure the
interface box, 2-pin and 3-pin jumpers. There are only
six 3-pin jumpers.

Scope
This reference card provides technical information for the
interface box that you purchased with your Comtrol™
controller.
The default setting for the interface box is RS-232
asynchronous mode. The following is a list of other possible
configurations:
• RS-422 asynchronous mode
• RS-232 or RS-422 synchronous mode (available on the
Hostess i, ports 1 and 2)
• RS-232 synchronous mode (available on the Hostess i/E,
Ports 1 and 2)
Configuring the Interface Box
settings inside the interface box do not need to be changed. If
you wish to use RS-422 asynchronous mode or RS-232/422
synchronous mode, remove the back cover from the interface
box and use Table 2 or 3 to set the jumpers.
Table 2 shows the jumper settings for RS-232 and RS-422
asynchronous modes.
Note: When looking into the interface box with the cable
hanging out the bottom, the jumper pins are numbered
from left to right; 1, 2, and 3 for the 3-pin jumpers, and
1 and 2 for the 2-pin jumpers.
