i. PnP modem installation
Before installing PCtel modem drivers, the PnP ISA Enabler driver must
be installed. The driver library on the Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM includes the
PnP ISA Enabler driver, which will allow the detection and installation of
Plug and Play devices in Windows NT 4.0. Install the PnP ISA Enabler
driver (PNPISA) using the following steps:
NOTE: Although Windows NT includes PNPISA to detect Plug and Play
devices, Plug and Play devices are not supported in Windows NT 4.0.
PNPISA is provided as a "use at your own risk" tool.
1. Locate the "Pnpisa.inf" file in the Drvlib\Pnpisa\x86 folder on the
Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM.
2. Use the right mouse button to click the "Pnpisa.inf" file, and then click
"Install" on the menu that appears.
3. Restart the computer.
After you restart your computer, you may receive a message that
Windows NT has detected your Plug and Play device(s). If your Plug and
Play modem is not detected try installing PNPISA again, unplug your
modem card, reboot your computer and try again.
When the modem has been detected, use the following steps:
1. Install the new device from the modem driver disk.
2. When Windows NT finishes the modem setup, restart the computer.
ii. Nonpnp/PCI modem installation
1. Open "Control Panel" and click on the "Ports" CPL.
2. Double click the "Add" button and set to available I/O base address
and IRQ. Make sure there is no hardware resource conflicts. You can use
"Windows NT Diagnostics" in the Administrative Tools to browse resources.
3. Go to "Control Panel" and click on the "Modems".
4. Add a new modem from the "MDMCHPIV.INF" file on the driver disk and
attach the modem to the port that you have just added.
5. When Windows NT finishes the modem setup, return to the "Control Panel".
On the menu bar, click "View" and then click "Refresh".
6. Go to "Control Panel" and click on the "PCtel Port".
7. Choose the port attached your modem and click OK.
8. Restart the computer.
iii. PCMCIA modem installation
1. Insert the modem into the computer.
2. Turn on the computer.
3. Go to the "Control Panel" and select "PC CARD (PCMCIA)". Select the
your PCMCIA modem and click on the "Properties" button.
4. Open the "Resources" property sheet. Write down the "Interrupt
Request" and "Input/Output Range" settings assigned to the modem (The IRQ
and I/O address will be used later in the installation).
5. Click on the "Ports" in the "Control Panel".
6. Click "Add" button to add a port and use the I/O resources you wrote
down in step 4 for the new COM port. When finished, click "OK".
