Installation of the modem V9x DSP under Mandrake 10.0
Requirements:
- Intel driver for the modem 536ep (intel-536EP-2.56.76.0.tgz). Look at
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/resources.html for downloading.
- Login as root and work with console
- You have to install the packages kernel-source (adequate to your kernel
version) and kdenetwork-kppp-3.1.3-37mdk for KPPP
Installation:
1. Copy the driver intel-536EP-2.56.76.0.tgz into the directory /usr/src.
2. Go into this directory /usr/src
3. Unzipped the driver with the command tar – intel-536EP-2.56.76.0.tgz
4. This will create the a new directory called intel-536EP-2.56.76.0
5. Change into this directory.
6. Set the commands
make clean
make 536
make install
If you get the error “make command not found” install the kernel-sources!
7. Now you can find the device 536ep at /dev. The driver also creates a link from
/dev/modem to /dev/536ep for using KPPP.
Configuration:
1. MINICOM:
minicom is not a package of the standard installation and has to be installed
additional. Start the program with the command minicom –s. With the arrow
keys and the return taste go to “serial port setup” and change the entry for A
into /dev/modem and for E into 115200 8 n 1 . Change these settings with
“save setup as dfl” and click on “exit”. Now the terminal program is starting and
you can communicate with modem with at commands. Check the country
settings with ATI12 and change it with the command AT+GCI=xx (xx= B4 for
UK, 7B for the Netherlands, 3D for France, B5 for USA).

Observations
Installation of V9x under SuSE 9.2
The modem is recognized of SuSE 9.2 as intel536ep and could be configured with
this package.
To use the modem with kinternet or wvdial you have to configure it with YAST. The
link from /dev/536ep0 to /dev/modem exists so you can use it. Choose 115200 bps
for baud rate and AT&F as init1. Now you could configure your provider and then it
should be possible to get an internet connection.
Country settings:
Normally the modem is set on USA1. to change this you have to use a terminal
program like minicom.
minicom is not a package of the standard installation and has to be installed
additional. Start the program with the command minicom –s. With the arrow keys and
the return taste go to “serial port setup” and change the entry for A into /dev/modem

Installation of the modem V9x DSP under SuSE 9.1 (Kernel 2.6.) and SuSE 9.0 (Kernel 2.4.x)
Requirements:
- Do not use the delivered driver 4.51 (in SuSE 9.0) for this modem
- Intel driver for the modem 536ep (intel-536EP-2.56.76.0.tgz). Look at
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/resources.html for downloading.
- Install the package kernel-source (adequate to your kernel version), gcc and make
- Install the package minicom for testing the modem
- Log in as root
Installation:
1. Delete the delivered driver of SuSE 9.0 if it is installed (Delete the software package under
hardware – modem)
2. Copy the driver intel-536EP-2.56.76.0.tgz into the directory /usr/src.
3. Go into this directory /usr/src
4. Unzipped the driver with the command tar – xzvf intel-536EP-2.56.76.0.tgz
