Description of this release
===========================

Matrox PowerDesk software includes a display driver and display
utilities. With this software, you can take full advantage of your
Matrox graphics hardware and you can access additional Matrox
display-related features.
Installation
============

To install Matrox PowerDesk, start the "Setup" program included
with it, then follow the on-screen instructions.

The setup program will only install software if a Matrox graphics
card model supported by the setup program is installed in your
computer.
New features
============

This software includes new features, especially for Matrox
hardware with DualHead support. These include:

- The use of different DualHead features (Multi-Display, DVDMax,
Zoom, and Clone) *without* restarting Windows

- Easier-to-use interface for DualHead controls

- Controls for dividing graphics resources (memory and bandwidth)
between your main and secondary displays

- More features accessible through user-defined hot keys (keyboard
shortcuts)
More information
================

For more information on Matrox PowerDesk, see the help file
included with it. For information specific to your Matrox graphics
card, see your Matrox or system manual.
Notes, problems, and limitations
================================

- Installation in different language versions of Windows

If you install software in a language different from the
language of your operating system (for example, English software
on a Japanese system), you may have problems with text and
dialog box controls being cut off. This is because of
differences in system fonts.

- OpenGL (3D) support

If you have a newer Matrox product or your Matrox software was
provided by the manufacturer of your computer, full OpenGL
support may be disabled with your Matrox display driver. For a
Matrox display driver with full OpenGL support enabled, see the
Matrox Web site (www.matrox.com/mga).

Description of this release
===========================

This product includes a Windows 95/98 display driver AND the Matrox
PowerDesk for Windows 95/98.
Installation
============

To install both Matrox PowerDesk and the Matrox display driver, start the
included "setup" program.

The setup program first asks you which language you want to use, then
to choose between a "Typical" or "Custom" installation. With a
"Typical" installation, the setup program installs all Matrox PowerDesk
utilities in the default "\Program Files\Matrox MGA PowerDesk" folder.
We recommend you use "Typical".

After PowerDesk is installed, the setup program automatically changes
the Windows 95/98 display driver, then prompts you to restart your computer
for all changes to take effect.

You can customize the installation process by editing the "mga.ini"
file. For example, you can change the default installation path, default
driver performance switches, default schemes, and so on. The file is
self-documented. This type of customization is for advanced users only.
More information
================

For more information on settings, refresh rates etc., see the WordPad
file "online.doc". This file is included on the Matrox disk, and installed
in your "\Program Files\Matrox MGA PowerDesk\" folder.
Registry settings
=================

PowerDesk settings are kept in the Windows 95/98 registry, under the keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MATROX\POWERDESK
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MATROX\DESKNAV
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MATROX\COLOR CONTROL
Notes, problems, and limitations
================================

- DirectDraw, Direct3D and DirectVideo support

The DirectDraw driver we provide is compatible with DirectX 2 (and
later) and includes Direct3D support. For our DirectDraw/Direct3D
driver to be called, and benefit from hardware acceleration,
Microsoft DirectX 2 (or later) MUST be installed, even for programs
originally made for DirectX 1.

Release description
===================

This is the Matrox Windows NT Display Driver. It supports
Microsoft Windows NT for x86 CPU's, version 4.0 (Build 1381 -- or
later).

This product includes:

- Display Driver
- Matrox PowerDesk for Windows NT 4.0
Installation
============

To install Matrox PowerDesk, start the "setup" program included
with it, then follow the on-screen instructions.

The setup program will only install software if a Matrox graphics
card model supported by the setup program is installed in your
computer.
Using Matrox PowerDesk
======================

Changing resolution, selecting a monitor, and using the Matrox
PowerDesk is covered in the "online.doc" file. You can view this
file with WordPad.
Hardware-accelerated 3D
=======================

For 3D hardware acceleration, the Matrox Windows NT 4.0 display
driver supports the OpenGL interface with 2 driver types -- MCD
(Mini Client Driver) and ICD (Installable Client Driver). The
Matrox Millennium, Millennium II, Mystique, Mystique 220, and
G100-based graphics cards have MCD support. The Matrox G200-based,
G400-based and later graphics cards have ICD support. (An ICD has
more potential for optimization than an MCD.)

3D hardware acceleration has the following restrictions:

- Currently no acceleration is available when multiple cards are
in use.

- The MCD/ICD does not support 8 bpp (256 colors) and 24 bpp
(16777216 colors) modes. 16 bpp (64 K colors) and 32 bpp (True
Color) modes are the ones that can be hardware-accelerated.

- Limitations to the available resolutions are to be expected. All
3D modes require extra memory to handle double buffering and/or
Z-buffering, and this memory is no longer available for display.
