1-1 Installing Software for Windows 3.1 and DOS

The setup program SETUP.EXE installs DOS and Windows 3.1 drivers and utilities.

1. Start Windows 3.1. In the Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu.

2. Insert the "Audio Utilities" diskette into a floppy disk drive A. In the Run
dialog box, type A:\SETUP, then click the OK button.

3. Follow the on-screen instructions. The setup program will copy DOS drivers
and utilities to the directory specified. All the Windows 3.1 drivers and
VxDs are copied to the Windows system directory. When the user installs the
Sound Maker DA for the first time, the A3CONFIG.EXE is started to configure
the board setting after the Setup program is finished.

[DOSINST.EXE for DOS Only installation]

The DOS setup program DOSINST.EXE copies all the DOS drivers and utilities to
the directory that user specifies. When the user installs the Sound Maker 3DA
for the first time the A3CONFIG.EXE is started to configure the board setting
after the Setup program is finished. DOSINST.EXE can be installed by typing
A:DOSINST.EXE at the DOS prompt.

To install the Windows 95 drivers:
1. The New Hardware Found message box announcing the detection of the sound
card. Select "Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer" and
click on OK.

2. Insert the "Audio Utilities" diskette into the a floppy disk drive A. In the
Copy Manufature's File From command line, type A:\, then click OK to copy
copy all the relative driver files to Windows 95.

Now double check that the sound drivers are installed:
1. Double-click on the System icon from the Control Panel. The System
Properties dialog box appears. Click on the Device Manager tab. The devices
listed by type.
2. Double-click on the item Sound, video and game controllers of Computer.
There, you should see three devices without any exclamation mark:

3. Install the ALSRACK player by running the SETUP.EXE file (also provided
on the "Audio Utilities" diskette from the Windows 95 Start menu|Run.
This will create the Avance Sound Program Group with the ALSRACK utility
icon. (See Appendix below for full descr of ALSRACK functions).
Troubleshooting:

[Possible Problems in DOS]

Problem: No sound in a DOS application
Cause: There could be conflicts in the IRQ or DMA settings.
Solution: Run the C:\A3SOUND\A3CONFIG.EXE and try another DMA, or IRQ,
then select Test button.

[Possible Problems in Windows 3.1]

Problem: There is no "Sound..." or "MIDI Sequencer..." item
under the menu "Device" in the Media Player.
Cause: Mixer driver is not loaded.
Solution: Open the SYSTEM.INI file with any file editor. You
should see the following:

For Windows NT 3.5x users:
1. Start Windows NT. Double-click on the Control Panel icon from the Main
Group.
2. Double-click on the Drivers icon. On the Drivers dialog box, click the
Add... button.
3. Select the Unlisted or Updated Driver item from the Add dialog box.
4. After the Install Driver screen appears, insert the "Audio Utilities"
diskette into drive A:. Type A:\NT, then click the OK button.
5. Follows the on-line instructions. While installing, if Driver Exists warning
message appears, select re-install midimap.cfg.

For Windows NT 4.0 users:
1. Start Windows NT. Double-click on the Multimedia icon from the Control
Panel. The Multimedia Properties dialog box appears.
2. Click on the Devices tab. The multimedia devices listed by type appear.
3. Click the Add button.
3. Select the Unlisted or Updated Driver item from the Add dialog box.
4. After the Install Driver screen appears, insert the "Audio Utilities"
diskette into drive A:. Type A:\NT, then click the OK button.
5. Follows the on-line instructions. While installing, if Driver Exists warning
message appears, select re-install midimap.cfg.
Insert the "Audio Utilities" diskette into drive A:, and within CONTROL
PANEL/MULTIMEDIA/DEVICE/ADD, choose "OK". While installing, "Driver Exists"
warning message will appear and will ask to keep the old or re-install.
Select re-install.
