Quick Start Guide
This chapter introduces you to the basicfeatures of your camcorder. See the page inparentheses ( ) for more information.
Pull down the Holding Grip to hold yourcamcorder as illustrated.
Slide the BATT RELEASElever to remove theconnecting plate from yourcamcorder.

1 Slide OPof the arrowand open the lid.
2 Push the middleportion of the back ofthe cassette to insert.
Insert the cassette in astraight line deeplyinto the cassettecompartment withthe window facingout.

4 After the cassettecompartment goesdown completely,close the lid until itclicks.

Do not pick up yourcamcorder by holding theviewfinder, the LCD panel,the battery pack or the jackcover.
1 Set the POWER switch to VCR whilepressing the small green button.
3 Press of the touch panel torewind the tape.
4 Press of the touch panel tostart playback.
NOTE
When using the touch panel, pressoperation buttons lightly with yourthumb supporting the LCD screen fromthe backside of it. Do not press the LCDscreen with sharp-pointed objects suchas pens.

Using this manual
As you read through this manual, buttons andsettings on your camcorder are shown in capitalletters.e.g. Set the POWER switch to CAMERA.
When you carry out an operation, you can hear abeep sound to indicate that thout.
Note on Cassette Memory
YouDV format. Youcan only use mini DV cassettes with yourcamcorder. We recommend that you use a tapewith cassette memory .

Using this manual
Precautions on camcorder care
The LCD screen and the viewfinder aremanufactured using high-precisiontechnology. However, there may be sometiny black points and/or bright points (red,blue, green, or white) that constantly appearon the LCD screen and in the viewfinder.
These points occur normally in themanufacturing process and do not affect therecorded picture in any way. Effective ratioof pixels and/or screen are 99.99% or more.
Do not let your camcorder get wet. Keep yourcamcorder away from rain and sea water.
Letting your camcorder get wet may cause yoSometimes thismalfunction cannot be repaired [a].
Never leave your camcorder exposed totemperatures above 60C (140F), such as in acar parkedsunlight
[b].
Do not place your camcorder so as to point theviewfinder or the LCD screen toward the sun.
The inside of the viewfinder or LCD screen maybe damaged [c].

Step 1 Preparing thepower supply
Charging the battery pack
Use the battery pack after charging it for yourcamcorder.
Your camcorder operates only with the
InfoLITHIUM battery pack (S series).
(1) Connect the mains lead to the AC adaptor.
(2) Connect the mains lead to mains.
(3) Align the hooks of the battery pack with the
AC adaptor. Then fit the bof the arrow. The CHARGE lamp
(orange) lights up. Charging begins.
When the CHARGE lamp goes out, normalcharge is completed. For full charge, whichallows you to use the battery longer than usual,leave the battery pack in place for approximatelyone hour after the CHARGE lamp goes out.

Notes on the AC adaptor
Attach the battery pack firmly.
Charge the battery pack on a flat surfacewithout vibration.
Remove the supplied connecting cord (DK-115)fromcharging is notpossible.
The charging time may diffeof the battery pack or the temperatureof the environment.
When a fully charged battery pack is installed,the CHARGE lamp will once light, then go out.
If the CHARGE lamp does not light or flash,check that the battery pack is correctly attachedto the AC adaptor. If it is not attached, it willnot be charged.
Prevent metallic objects from coming intocontact with the metal parts of the connectingcord of the AC adaptor. This may cause a short-circuit, damaging the AC adaptor.
Keep the battery pack dry.
When the battery pack is not to be used for along time, charge the battery pack once fully,and then use it until it fully discharges again.
Keep the battery pack in a cool place.
Charging temperature
The temperature range for charging is 0 C to 40
C (32 F to 104 F).
However, to provide maximum batteryefficiency, the recommended temperature rangewhen chaF to 86 F).
If ththe batteryremaining indicator indicates that the batterypack has enough power to operate
Charge the battery pack fully again so that theindication on the battery remaining indicator iscorrect.
After charging the battery pack
Remove the battery pack from the AC adaptor.
Note on NP-F10/FS11
The batteryou carryouor with the LCDpanel opened. We recommend that you use the
NP-FS21/FS31 large capacity battery pack (notsupplied).

Plug the mains lead deeply
Be sure to plug the mains lead deeply into theterminal of AC power adaptor so that it is firmlylocked. If there is a gap between the plug ofmains lead and the terminal of AC poweradaptor, it does not affect the efficiency of the ACpower adaptor.
What is InfoLITHIUM?
The InfoLITHIUM is a lithium ion battery packwhich can exchange data such as batteryconsumption with compatible electronicequipment. This unit is compatible with the
InfoLITHIUM battery pack (S series). Yourcamcorder operates only with the
InfoLITHIUM battery.
InfoLITHIUM S series battery packs have the
mark.
InfoLITHIUM is a trademark of Sony
Corporation.
Installing the battery pack
Install the battery pack to use your camcorderoutdoors.
(1) While sliding BATT RELEASE in the directionof the arrow 1, slide the battery terminalcover in the direction of the arrow 2.
(2) Insert the battery pack in the direction of thearrow until it clicks.

To remove the battery pack
The battery packasthe battery terminal cover.
After installing the battery pack
Do not carry your camcorder by holding thebattery pack. If you do so, the battery pack mayslide off your camcorder unintentionally,damaging your camcorder.
Note on the remaining battery time indicator
The remaining battery time indicator on the LCDscreen or in the viewfinder roughly indicates therecording time. The indicator may not be correct,depending on the conditions in which you arerecording. When you close the LCD panel andopen it again, it takes about 1 minute for thecorrect remaining battery time to be displayed.
Note on the battery terminal cover
To protect the battery terminals, install thebattery terminal cover after the battery pack isremoved.

Connecting to the mains
When you use your camcorder for a long time,we recommend that you power it from the mainsusing the AC adaptor.
(1) Connect the supplied connecting cord to the
DC OUT jack on the AC adaptor.
(2) Slide the connecting plate in the direction ofthe arrow.
(3) Connect the mains lead to the AC adaptor.
(4) Connect the mains lead to the mains.
To remove the connecting plate
The connecting plate is removed in the same wayas the battery pack.
WARNING
The mains lead must only be changed at aqualified service shop.
PRECAUTION
The set is not disconnected from the AC powersource (the mains)tothe mains, even if the set itself has been turnedoff.

Use Sony DC Adaptor/Charger (not supplied).

(1) Install the battery pack, or connect the ACadaptor for the powerSlide OPEN/Z EJECT in thopen the lid. The cassettecompartment automatically lifts up andopens.
(3) Push the middle portion of the back of thecassette to insert.
Insert the cassette in a straight line deeply intothe cassette compartment with the windowfacing out.
(4) Close the cassette compartment by presscompartment.
The cassette compartment automatically goesdown.
(5) After the cassette compartment goes downcompletely, close the lid until it clicks.
To eject a cassette
Follow the procedure above, and take out thecassette in step 3.

Do not press the cassette compartment down.
Doing so may cause malfunction.

Recording a picture
Your camcorder automatically focuses for you.
(1) Remove the lens cap and pull the lenInstall the power source and insert a cassette.for moreinfoPull out the viewfPull down the Holding Grip.
Hold your camcorder firmly as illustrated.

To enable smooth transition
Transition between the last scene you recordedand the next scene is smooth as long as you donot eject the cayourcamcorder.
However, check the following:Do not mix recordings in the SP mode and onesin the LP mode on one tape.

If you leave your camcorder in the standbymode for 5 minutes while the cassette isinserted
Your camcorder automatically turns off. This isto save battery power and to prevent battery andtape wear. To resume the standby mode, set the
POWER switch to OFF, and to CAMERA again.
However, your camcorder does not turn offautomatically while the cassette is not inserted.
When you reonone tape or you record in the LP mode
The transition between scenes is not smooth.
The playback thetime code may not be written properly betweenscenes.
Adjusting the viewfinder
If you record pictures with the LCD panel closed,check the picture with the viewfinder. Adjust theviewfinder lens to your eyesight so that theindicators in the viewfinder come into sharpfocus.

The LCD panel moves about 90 degrees to theviewfinder side and about 180 degrees to the lensside.
If you turn the LCD panel over so that it faces theother way, the indicator appears in theviewfinder and on the LCD screen (Mirrormode).
When closing the LCD panel, set it verticallyuntil it clicks, and swing it into the camcorderbody.
Notes
Shooting with the LCD screen makes batterylife shorter than using the viewfinder.

When you shoot close to a subject
If you cannot get a sharp focus, move the poweuntil the focus issharp. You can shoot a subject that is at leastabout 80 cm (about 2 feet 5/8 inch) away fromthe lens surface in the telephoto position, orabout 1 cm (about 1/2 inch) away in the wide-angle position.
Notes on digital zoom
Digital zoom starts to function when zoomexceeds 10 .
The picture quality deteriorates as you movethe power zoom lever toward the T side.

Shooting in the dark
(NightShot/Super Nightshot)
The NightShot function enables you to shoot asubject in a dark place. For example, you cansatisfactorily record the environment ofnocturnal animals for observation when you usethis function.
While your camcorder is in the CAMERA/memory camera mode, slide NIGHTSHOT to
ON.
and NIGHTSHOT indicators flash on the
LCD screen or in the viewfinder. To cancel the
NightShot function, slide NIGHTSHOT to OFF.
Using Super NightShot
The Super NightShot mode makes subjects morethan 16 times brighter than those recorded in the

You can make a recording with the self-timer.
This mode is useful when you want to recordyourself.

(3) Press START/STOP.
Self-timer starts counting down from 10 witha seconds of thecountdown, the beep sound gets faster, thenrecording starts automatically.

You can turn the LCD panel over and move itback to the camcorder body with the LCD screenfacing out.
If you leave the power on for a long time
Your camcorder gets warm. This is not amalfunction.

Turn the LCD panel over and mbody with the LCD screen facing out,and pull out the viewfinder until it clicks. In thiscase, the picture is not displayed on the LCDscreen.

To control the display of thescreen indicators
Press DISPLAY/TOUCH PANEL on yourcamcorder or DISPLAY on the Remote
Commander supplied with your camcorder.
The indicators disappear on the LCD screen.
To make the indicators appear, press DISPLAY/
TOUCH PANEL again.
Using the data code function
Your camcorder automatically records notalso the recording data
(date/time or various settings when recorded)
(Data code).
Follow the steps below to display the data codeusing the touch panel or the Remote
Commander.
Using the touchmode, press FN and select
PAGE3.
(2) Press DATA CODE.
(3) Select CAM DATA or DATE DATA, thenpress OK.

Recording data is your camcorders informationwhen you have recorded. In the recording mode,the recording data will not be displayed.
When you use the data code function, bars

The tape is unreadable due to tape damage ornoise.
The tape was recorded by a camcorder withoutthe date and time set.

Viewing the recordingon TV
Connect your camcorder to your TV or VCR withthe A/V connecting cable supplied with yourcamcorder to watch the playback picture on the
TV screen. You can operate the playback conas when you monitorplayback pictures on the LCD screen. Whenmonitoring the playback picture on the TVscreen, we recommend that you power yourcamcorder from main17). Refer to the operating instructions of your
TV or VCR.

If your TV is already connectedto a VCR
Connect your camcorder to the LINE IN input onthe VCR by using the A/V connecting cablesupplied with your camcorder. Set the inputselector on the VCR to LINE.

If your TV or VCR is a monauraltype
Connect the yellow plug of the A/V connectingcable to the video input jack and the white or thered plug to the audio input jack on the VCR orthe TV. If you connect the white plug, the soundis L (left) signal. If you connect the red plug, thesound is R (right) signal. video jack
Connect using an S video cable (not supplied) toobtain high-quality pictures. With thisconnection, you do not need to connect theyellow (video) plug of the A/V connecting cable.
Connect the S video cable (nojacks on both your camcorder and the TVor the VCR.
This connection produces higher quality DVformat pictures.
To display the screen indicators on TV

Recorll image on a tape
Tape Photo recording
You can record a still picture. This mode is usefulwhen you want to print a picture using a videoprinter (not supplied).
You can record about 510 pictures in the SP modeand about 765 pictures in the LP mode on a 60-minute tape.
Besides the operation described here, yourcamcorder can record still pictures on Memory
Sticks (p. 127).
(1) Set the PIn the standby mode, keep pressing PHOTOlightly until a still picture appears. The
CAPTURE indicator appears. Recording doesnot start yet.
To change the still picture, release PHOTO,select a still picture again, and then press andhold PHOTO lightly.
(3) Press PHOTO deeper.
The still picture in the viewfinder or on the about sevenseconds. The sound during those sevenseconds is also recorded.
The the viewfinderor on the LCD screen until the recording iscompleted.

During tape photo recording, you cannotchange the mode or setting.
When recorll picture, do not shakeyour camcorder. The picture may fluctuate.

To use the tape photo recording functionusing the Remote Commander
Press PHOTO on the Remote Commander. Yourcamcorder records a picture on the LCD screenor in the viewfinder immediately.
To use the tape photo recording functionduring normal CAMERA recording
Press PHOTO deeper. The stfor about seven seconds and yourcamcorder returns to the standby mode. Youcannot select another still picture.
To record clear and less fluctuated stillpictures
We recommend that you record on Memory
Sticks.
